Abstract

The amount of Muller cell cytoplasm has been recorded in electrom micrographs from all layers of the rat retina. From the determination of the volume fraction, the systematic point counting method was preferred. On the average, Muller cell cytoplasm accounted for 42.9% of the total area in the stratum opticum, 9.9% in the inner plexiform layer, 9.2% in the inner nuclear layer, 8.4% in the outer plexiform layer, 5.1% in the outer layer, and 1.2% in the visual cell layer. Values for different levels within each layer were also obtained. The proportion of the total Muller cell cytoplasm of the retina in the different layers was found to be: in stratum opticum, 30.8%; inner plexiform layer, 31.6%; inner nuclear layer, 17.1%; outer plexiform layer 4.8%; outer nuclear layer, 12.8%; visual cell layer, 3.0%.
