Abstract

Abstract : This paper documents the results of a simulation study comparing three computerized optimal weight scoring (COWS) procedures based on item response theory, with conventional scoring. The effect of the COWS procedures is to differentially weight test items as a function of examine ability and the item characteristics. Low ability examinees are given very low weights on difficult test items, lowering the effects of guessing, and decreasing test error.
