Abstract

The strength of hot pressed silicon nitride at room and high temperatures have been analysed in terms of a modification of the Weibull flaw distribution function. The function gives an upper and lower strength limit and is characterised by two shape parameters. Failure predictions during static and dynamic loading made from this function, by the use of fracture mechanics theory, are in close agreement with the experimental results.
