Abstract

A novel modified ligament yield criterion to calculate the residual strength for aluminum alloy panels with Multiple Site Damage (MSD) is proposed. Different from the conventional ligament yield criterion the novel method is based on modifying the plastic zone of the crack tip. The microdefects can be represented by the coefficient of plastic zone determined after the material processing. Then modified plastic zone size is much closer to that of the fracture. The residual strength tests are performed on plate specimens in 7075-T651 aluminum alloy sheet with MSD. Furthermore, we also verify the availability and capability of the modified method with public literature. The predicted residual strengths are within 3% averagely of the corresponding test results, much more accurate in comparison with other methods.
