Abstract
Neuroscience Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) infection has been linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in various ways, but direct evidence of a causal link has been missing, even for in vitro models. Cairns et al. used a human induced neural stem cell three-dimensional tissue model and demonstrated that infection with HSV-1 reproduces some features seen in AD patient brain tissues, such as large fibrillar plaques, gliosis, and neuroinflammation. Treatment with an antiviral drug diminished the observed phenotype. This model may be valuable for future mechanistic and therapeutic studies considering the link between HSV infection and AD. Sci.
