Abstract

Sivakumar, M. and Herzog, A., 1978. A model for the prediction of reaeration coefficient in lakes from wind velocity. Wind over lakes and ponds induces water circulation and also affects the reaeration of water and the process of diffusion of dissolved oxygen. A modification of the eddy cell method of mass transfer is presented which permit the calculation of the oxygen transfer coefficient from the given wind velocity. It is suggested that a linear relationship exist between the reaeration coefficient and the wind shear velocity. This relationship is similar to that which exists between the water shear velocity and the reaeration coefficient in streams and rivers. The proposed model attempts to clarify the basic physical processes at the air-water interface. The model gave realistic predictions when used with observed data published by other researchers.
