Abstract

This paper describes a new model for irradiation-induced segregation in dilute binary alloys. The model is based on the kinetic theory of diffusion and uses the equations for the migration of solute atoms in a fcc lattice derived by Lidiard for the case of vacancy motion and by Allnatt et al. for the case of interstitial motion. This model is used to calculate the segregation of implanted manganese atoms in nickel during ion bombardment, and the theoretical results show good agreement with the experimental observations. The results indicate that the ‘effective’ displacement damage rate is much less than the calculated value, in agreement with other experimental observations.
