Abstract

This study aims to construct a model facilitating the design of patterns with desirable friction characteristics by investigating the effects of pattern geometries. By utilizing precision machining, non-uniform asymmetric patterns were machined and then transferred to a polymer. Friction experiments were designed and performed to investigate detailed pattern geometries. Results showed that the effects of all geometries were statistically significant on friction, and anisotropic friction characteristics were discussed. Based on this, the prediction model was constructed using Gaussian regression and then verified with patterns with maximum anisotropy. The experimental and model were in good agreement, showing that it is possible to design and fabricate patterns with desirable friction characteristics. Our results will aid the fabrication of functional micro patterned surfaces.
