Abstract

A detailed theory of the “mixed” type interferometer is presented. This takes into account: (i) the relative orientation of the fringe system and the biprism wire, and (ii) the detrimental effect on the fringe contrast of the partial coherence (both spatial and temporal) of the illumination. The main results predicted by the theory are confirmed by new experiments.
