Abstract

The fundamental “misrepresentation” ( F. Wilkening, 1988 Developmental Review, 8, 361–367 ) resides in Wilkening's failure to distinguish method from theory. This error results in contradictory statements, nonparsimonious models, inaccurate attributions, and misinterpretations of both theories as well as our review of them ( D. D. Kerkman, & J. C. Wright, 1988, Developmental Review, 8, 323–360 ). A hybrid model that combines sequential decision theory (SDT) and information integration theory (IIT) may be of little value beyond the level of description. SDT compares favorably with IIT in describing and predicting developmental transitions as well as guiding instruction. A strategy selection model may explain some apparent taskwise discrepancies in rule use that Wilkening (1988) notes.
