Abstract

Body centric Networks (BCNs) are the most important and attractive part of the next generation (5G and beyond) wireless technologies having a plethora of applications in day to day life. However the design of antennas for BCNs is a challenging task. Such antennas should have small size, light weight, higher gain and larger bandwidth besides having a stable radiation pattern under the influence of human body effects. This paper presents a miniaturised Ka/V dual band mmWave microstrip antenna for 5G BCN applications. The antenna has very small dimensions of 2.28 × 3.06 × 0.14 mm3 and operates at 33.5 GHz (Ka band) and 60.8 GHz (V band). The performance of the antenna is examined for “Off-body, On-body and In-body” BCN application scenarios. The radiation pattern, return loss, peak gain and −10 dB bandwidth results reveal that the antenna performs quite well at all interested frequencies. A comparative study with state of art mmWave antennas also shows the effectiveness of the proposed antenna.
