Abstract
This paper compares the measured full energy peak efficiency of two coaxial Ge(Li) detectors which are nearly equal in sensitive volume, but differ appreciably in measured γ-ray efficiency due mainly to differences in mounting characteristics. The effective interaction depth of γ-rays in these crystals was measured for the two detectors. Knowledge of this depth results in being able to calculate the absolute efficiency for any source-to-detector distance if the efficiency has been measured at one known distance. Curves are presented for the measured absolute efficiencies, the effective interaction depths, and γ-ray activities which have been adjusted correctly by using the effective interaction depth.
