Abstract

Starting from a dynamical model for the \(N\bar N \to \pi \pi\)process, which in the pseudophysical region agrees with available quasiempirical information, the scalar (σ) and vector (ρ) piece of correlated two-pion exchange in the pion-nucleon interaction is derived via dispersion integrals over the unitarity cut. Supplemented by conventional (direct and exchange) pole diagrams involving the nucleon and the Δ isobar, our πN interaction model accounts for the πN phase shifts in the elastic region as well as for low energy parameters and the πN Σ term. A quantitative description of P11-wave πN scattering is obtained without inclusion of a genuine N* (Roper) resonance. In the pion production region the effect of coupling to the reaction channel σN is investigated.
