Abstract

A model for thermal growth of border ice in rivers is presented. Tentative relations which take into account heat loss to the atmosphere, water temperature and the local velocity and turbulence level of the river are derived and tested. The model is vertically integrated, two-dimensional and is based on the conservation equations for mass, momentum and thermal energy. Applying this model to a reach of Lule river in the north of Sweden shows encouraging agreement with field observations.
