Abstract

Eiko & Koma harnessed their training in butoh and Neue Tanz to develop their own style, Delicious Movement, which employs images of nature and everyday life. Eiko & Koma's workshops are built upon image prompts that are meant to generate movement. Guided by Eiko & Koma's ‘Delicious Movement Workshop Manifesto’ and drawing from my participation in and written documentation of an unprecedented 10-week course taught by the choreographers at the University of California, Los Angeles in autumn 2006, I outline this unique image based training method, provide examples of specific exercises, and place these in the context of particular workshops. Finally, I suggest ways that the training is manifested on stage.
