Abstract

Lung macrophages, in the absence of serum factors in vitro, strongly bound and ingested yeast cells ( Candida krusei and zymosan). Binding was temperature-and calcium-dependent, and was inhibited by the presence of D-mannose, D-glucosamine, horseradish peroxidase and beta-glucuronidase. Pretrypsinization of the macrophages also prevented binding of yeast cells. Binding was not affected by D-mannitol, D-glucose, D-galactose nor L-fucose. I suggest that macrophage binding of yeast cells is mediated by a mannose/glucosamine receptor on the cell membrane. This receptor may be responsible for opsosin-independent phagocytosis of activators of the alternative complement pathway and, as well, the phagocyte-dependent clearance of certain lysosomal enzymes.
