Abstract

A dual air-gap surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous (DAG-SMPMS) motor is proposed for high-efficiency direct-drive applications in the low-speed region. The proposed radial-based DAG-SMPMS motor has two inner and outer stators with the same windings in a series connection. The proposed motor has higher power than the conventional PMSM with the same dimensions. To improve the performance of the motor and reduce the losses, a magnetic screen is designed and inserted in the middle of the rotor core. The applied magnetic screen separates two flux passes and reduces the torque ripple. The proposed DAG-SMPMS motor with and without a magnetic screen is compared and analyzed through Ansys software. The simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed DAG-SMPMS motor with a magnetic screen.
