Abstract

Depending on whether the vertical gradient of the potential temperature is zero, positive or negative, the atmosphere is said to be in a condition of neutral, stable or unstable stratification (Stull, 1988). The effects of non-neutral stratification on surface-layer flow over homogeneous terrain are well represented by Monin-Obukhov similarity theory (Monin and Obukhov, 1954). However, in the case of stratified flow in complex terrain, no such simple relations have been found.
