Abstract

The safety and early clinical dental pharmacology of a patch device containing 50 mg of lignocaine was evaluated on a placebo controlled double blind basis in nine volunteers. Application of the patch to the oral mucosa produced soft tissue anaesthesia of similar depth and extent to that achieved by infiltration anaesthetics and raised the electrical threshold stimulus of the adjacent teeth. The risk of systemic toxicity was negligible since maximum plasma lignocaine concentrations were very low (7–94 ng/ml).
