Abstract

A simple method to determine the low-temperature lattice constant of alkali halide single crystals is described. The method requires the measurement of the F absorption band after crystal coloration, and the use of an empirical expression that relates the lattice constant and the peak position of the F absorption band, which may be obtained from the three-dimensional quantum mechanical infinite potential well. The subject is quite suitable for an advanced undergraduate physics laboratory course, since it may provide the students with an in depth understanding of fundamental concepts in solid-state physics, particularly those related to crystal structure and point defects.
