Abstract
Many of the world's leading industrialists and strategists prophesy that if ever there is a third world war, it shall not be won on the battlefields so famed of old, but rather success shall come to the victor from his superiority in the factory and scientific laboratory. The 'Post Office Directory' was one of Thorndyke's favourite books of reference; the amount of curious and recondite information that he succeeded in extracting from its matter-of-fact pages would have surprised no one more than it would the compilers of the work.
