Abstract
The concept of Distributed Computer Control Systems (DCCS) has proved to be very suitable for process automation. Because there are possible applications of Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) on the different levels of automation and control (alarm diagnosis, control, optimization and adaptation, etc), these systems should be part of the DCCS. The different philosophy and available software for KBS, as compared to real-time systems and requirements, demands also a distributed structure with separation of tasks over a computer network. The paper describes the application of an expert system in a real-time environment, supervising an adaptive control strategy. The implementation and cooperation between the expert system and the real-time environment is described with emphasis on the provisions implemented to operate the complete system on a DCCS.
