Abstract

The design of a knowledge-based expert system for planning a local area network (LAN) in ATC/CCL/ITRI is reported. The heuristic rules currently followed by network planners are incorporated into the knowledge base using the expert system tool CLIPS. At the same time, algorithms aimed at minimizing investment cost, computing service reliability, and committing network flow, respectively, are also developed to support the inference engine to reach proper LAN configuration plans. In addition, a graphical user interface is designed to allow network planners to easily communicate with computers through the reasoning of expert system. The expert system using the developed algorithms, knowledge base, and user interface is built on SUN network environment and applied to plan LAN in ITRI. It is demonstrated that the expert system can yield several suitable LAN configuration plans and assist the network planners in reaching an optimal LAN configuration plan by providing valuable information. >
