Abstract
A series of poly(methyl methacrylate (MMA)- co-methacrylic acid (MAA)), a surface active polyelectrolyte, with different molecular weights and copolymer compositions was synthesized. The emulsion polymerization of styrene was carried out using these copolymers as the emulsifier and potassium persulfate as the initiator, respectively, to examine the effects of the copolymer molecular weight and composition on the rate of polymerization and the number of polymer particles produced. The rate of polymerization and the number of polymer particles produced were found to depend slightly on the copolymer molecular weight, having a maximum when the molecular weight was in the range of 5000–10 000, and to decrease monotonously with the content of MAA in the copolymer.
