HAMILTON’s[2]famous rule forsuccessfulevolution ofaltruistic behaviour isgeneralised to include the degree to which an altruistic gene has already spread in the population, and the frequency of altruistic acts (or the population per act). The results are seemingly paradoxical, a main condition for spreading being that altruistic acts should not occur too often.
