Abstract

This article aims to point out the reasons that led to the creation of the ISM code, the requirements for its application and the code's objectives, together with all the documentation necessary for its effectiveness. Also the implementation process for safety management is explained, as well as the certificates generated and the description of the functions of each position involved in its administration. Audits and their relevance in the safety scenario of shipping companies and their vessels are mentioned. Finally, it is shown that the main goal of code apllication is to develop a change in the manner how team work drives the daily operation, reducing risks on board in order to decrease the frequency of accidents.
