Abstract

In this work, a scanning reference electrode technique (SRET) has been integrated with a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), for in situ studies of localized corrosion of metals. The hybrid scanning system has been established to synchronously image the surface topography in nano scale and the electrochemical potential distribution in micro resolution at the same location through a Pt-Ir micro probe. Based on the design and fabrication of the various scanning micro probes, an in-situ correlative study of topography-reactivity for the localized corrosion has been achieved.
