Abstract

In 1975 the London & Lancashire Insurance Company of South Africa Limited was deregistered and passed into history largely unnoticed by the South African insurance industry despite the fact that, in its heyday, it was originally one of the most famous and respected names of the great Victorian insurance era. The 1862 founding of the company in Britain coincided with the formation of the first South African London-based banks.
