Abstract

The long history of archaeology in Malaysia over the past 170 years or so has witnessed a gradual change from speculative-descriptive to scientific and interdisciplinary. It has also resulted in a tremendous growth of research and knowledge about the prehistory of Malaysia. This chapter presents an update and review of the history and practice of archaeology in Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak in four main periods: the Early Colonial/Antiquarianism Period, the Establishment of Museums Period, Post War World II/Independence Period, and the Local Archaeologists and Modern Era. Discussions are focused on individuals and organizations that have made significant discoveries and contributions to the history and practice of archaeology in Malaysia.
