Abstract
HR 3333 The Minority Health Improvement and Health Disparity Elimination Act of 2007 is a step toward defeating racism, injustice, and inequality that pervades the current United States health care system. The demands for better access to health care and higher quality care for minorities, culturally and linguistically appropriate health services for peoples living in the United States must be required if we were to develop as a respectable society that champions democratic equality. Old biomedical models have been preferred by some organizations because of invested financial interests; however, HR 3333 supports a more holistic model that includes both biomedical and public/social health models and would begin to meet the needs of a growing minority population. Other concerns dealing with defining, teaching, and assessing cultural competence, funding issues for linguistic services, and technological funding for research and data collection are valid. However, they should not be prohibitive in HR 3333, but rather inclusive in the plan for implementing a comprehensive program to combat health disparities within the current health care system.
