Abstract

Perhaps the best way to conclude my comments is to reaffirm my belief in the vitality and importance of the work of archivists in the federal government. Archivists today are making decisions about records that will determine to a large degree the records that will be available for research in future years. Most of the federal records available for research in the twenty-first century will result from today's appraisal decisions. As the record creation process continues to adjust to technology, the work of archivists will also change in response to new circumstances. I am confident, therefore, that archivists twenty years from now will not be doing the same things in the same way as today. It is because of this dynamic dimension that professional archivists will be alive and well in the twenty-first century.
