Abstract
High temperature carbonisation is one of the main ways of coal utilisation. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) with synchrotron radiation can be used for in-situ measurement of the carbon network structure change during heating coal. Recently, we developed a high temperature (1,200°C) furnace for in-situ SAXS measurements on coal carbonisation. The device essentially consists of a heating body and a controller. Measurement of lignite (brown coal) carbonisation has been successfully performed with the device at the 1W2A SAXS station at the Beijing synchrotron radiation facility (BSRF). The results show that the carbon network of coal presents surface fractal structure at different carbonisation temperatures. With the increase in temperature, the fractal dimension presents a wavelike increase reflecting the structural changes during different stages of coal carbonisation.
