Abstract

A high resolution gravimetric geoid has been determined for the eastern African region bounded by latitude −5° ≤ ϕ ≤ 5°, longitude 29° E. ≤ λ ≤ 42° E., comprising Kenya, Uganda and part of Tanzania. The geoid was determined at a resolution grid of 5 minutes of arc. The Geodetic Reference System 1980 (GRS80) was used. The data used included the OSU91A global geopotential model, a recent terrestrial gravity data anomaly set, satellite altimetry data and digital terrain models. The spherical one-dimensional fast Fourier transform method was used to compute the geoid heights residual to OSU91A. Comparisons are made with geometric heights derived from results of the African Doppler Survey Project (ADOS).
