Abstract

ABSTRACT The study advances research by Simon, examining to what extent certain ‘Hidden Champion’ characteristics could be useful for explaining how a relatively small player can compete in a crowded Hong Kong banking sector. A case is presented based on secondary data and a series of in-depth interviews. The study reveals the bank shares many of the core values of ‘hidden champions’, including active leadership and the role the founders play in the bank’s capacity as a relatively small player to compete. Its ability to carve out a niche in this market and provide added value allows the bank to succeed.
