Abstract
ABSTRACT Existing research has revealed the mixed effects of algorithmic management transparency. By differentiating the source of transparency, we aim to understand when and how algorithmic management transparency translates into gig workers’ performance. Drawing upon the proactive motivation model, we propose that the effects of algorithmic management transparency hinge on leader management transparency to influence gig workers’ motivational states, which promote their knowledge seeking and performance. Based on multi – source and time – lagged data from 219 gig workers in China, the model was supported. We highlight the synergistic effect of algorithmic and leader management transparency on facilitating gig workers’ proactivity to improve performance.
