Abstract
An inventory dated 8 March 1629, made for the 1st Earl of Westmorland, was found to contain the details of some of the contents of property in London called Westmorland House. The descriptions and values given suggested that it was a high-status and substantial property, but almost no trace of it was found in the historic record. Examination of cartographic and historical records, including the inventory of 1629, has revealed the likely location, form and history of the property, showing it to be a lost ‘Great House’ whose fortunes were closely linked to the events of the seventeenth century and the changing fortunes of the Earls of Westmorland.
