Abstract

This first published grammar of Halkomelem, an endangered Northwest Coast Indian language, includes chapters on phonetics and phonemics, morphophonemics, each of the word classes, the syntax, the semantics and sememics, and morphosememics (describing domain memberships and systematic alternations of meaning in derivation). The author proposes a new comprehensive theory of semantics and also maps place names and color terms.
