Abstract
Productivity is treated as a systems concept. It is argued that the causal texture of the system's environment dictates the relevant productivity construct and measurement. Based on Emery and Trist's taxonomy of environments, three concepts of productivity are defined: Process productivity, bounded productivity and systemic productivity. Each concept implies a different measure of productivity. Current economic and managerial literature is related to these concepts.
