Abstract

A simple expression for the periodic photothermal deflection of a probe laser beam passing parallel to the surface of a sample uniformly heated by a periodically modulated light beam is presented. The sample may consist of any number of layers on a substrate. The analytic expression for the periodic temperature at the surface T s, is obtained by solving the one-dimensional heat equation in the different media, and assuming a continuity of the temperature and the heat flux at the different interfaces. This temperature depends on the thermal and optical properties of these different media. We find that our results for the substrate, one and two layer cases, are just in another form, simpler than those already known. As illustrated we have studied the GaAs, GaAlAs/GaAs, and InP/GaInAs/InP heterostructures.
