Publicación de artículos académicos: buenas prácticas y recomendaciones para la redacción y envío a revistas científicas
  • May 1, 2020
  • Rafael Pedraza-Jimenez

In the current academic context, the publication of research articles in scientific journals has become a requirement, not only to develop an academic career, but also to overcome different postgraduate studies. Despite this, the resources that guide people who must tackle the arduous task of publishing remain scarce. This article aims to contribute to filling this gap. To this end, it presents recommendations and good practices that are useful, mainly -although not exclusively-, to help new researchers to maximize their chances of successfully publishing in a scientific journal. In this way, this work addresses aspects related to: the writing of scientific articles; the selection of appropriate journals for publication; the process of sending the article to scientific journals; the article evaluation process by a scientific journal; and the procedure for responding to the comments of the journal reviewers.

Publishing articles in scholarly journals is an unavoidable activity for academics. Some courses require postgraduate students to publish in a journal in order to pass their classes. Some Indonesian institutions require students to publish articles in a journal before graduation and journal publication has become one of the requirements for lecturers to be promoted into a higher-ranked job. Out of these obligations, there are many benefits of publishing articles in a journal. One of these is that our thoughts and expertise will be conveyed to the public. This will attract further benefits such as being invited to be the speaker on the topic about which we have written or being invited to collaborate on further research and publications.

Improving the efficiency of manuscript selection

Science relies strongly on the publication of articles in scientific journals and it is clear that decisions concerning which papers merit publishing should be based on a process of manuscript selection that is as objective, repeatable, reliable and transparent as possible. Manuscript selection, however, has many practical downfalls. There is considerable controversy concerning issues such as whether or not the process should be blind both for authors and reviewers in order to prevent biased selection in relation to country of origin (Budden et al., 2008), sex (Young et al., 2008) or research topic (Michaels, 2008). Another critical point is the imbalance between supply and demand of manuscripts as this likely leads to biased selection (Young et al., 2008). Also important is the issue that following rejection, the editor and reviewers of the new journal selected for would-be publication by the authors start the process from scratch, as if the opus had not already passed through a thorough process of peer review. Such rules of play seem to promote the role of sheer luck in the process of manuscript selection. Authors of a rejected paper have the growing hope of ‘greater luck’ the next time regarding reviewer assignment as they believe in the quality of their work. For the correct advancement of science I consider there should be a common global database available to editors, where each manuscript which has been subjected to an SCI journal is recorded. It should include a copy of the editor’s and reviewers’ comments, and also the authors’ replies. Hochberg et al. (2009) recently expressed their concern regarding the fact that authors usually think that manuscript submittal is a stochastic process, whereas in fact reviewers usually focus on the same set of criticisms. To solve this problem they suggest a) having colleagues reviewing a manuscript before submission, and b) requiring authors to state in a cover letter that reviewer comments from the previous submittal were taken into account. Option b is suggested as an alternative to obliging authors to declare whether or not their submission was previously rejected by another journal, because they think this could prejudice the evaluation of the new submission. However, I believe that the system I propose here would prevent prejudiced evaluations because authors would have the opportunity to upload the response to reviewer’s comments so that second-round reviewers would have the chance to see both the problems previously detected in the manuscript and the defence offered by authors. Although not a perfect system its benefits would probably outweigh the caveats. Such a system would improve the quality of the final paper and facilitate the work load for second-round reviewers and editors. Indeed, some journals already seem to be implementing a solution which is fairly similar to our proposal, asking authors of rejected papers for permission to forward reviewer reports to the new journal chosen by the authors to submit the revised work (see Hochberg et al., 2009). Proposals to reward or punish reviewers depending on their rapidity to elaborate their reports (Hauser & Fehr, 2007) does not foster accumulated quality improvement. Science quality would undoubtedly gain from making previous information concerning a manuscript’s review available to new reviewers, as in a Bayesian framework of inference (Martin et al., 2005) because starting a new each time, as if previous information did not exist, is simply not an efficient way to proceed in science

Scientific publication is an activity that every academician, including teachers, should carry out. Publication activities can take various forms. One form of scientific publication is the publication of articles in scientific journals. Unfortunately, the publication of articles in partner schools, namely MA Ma'arif NU Science Al-Quran Contributes, still needs to be higher. Only 9.09% of teachers have experience writing articles; the rest, or as many as 90.91% of teachers, still need to carry out article publication activities. Therefore, training activities for writing scientific journal articles are needed. Article writing training activities are carried out offline and online. The series of activities consisted of providing theory related to scientific journal articles, independent practice, and writing assistance twice. The results of the activity show that there is a slight increase in the number of teachers who can compile articles. There, 27.27% of teachers have been able to compile complete articles. There are also 72.72% of teachers who have been able to access the Open Journal System (OJS) and are able to create accounts on journals. The results of the questionnaire also showed a positive response from the teacher. The "agree" option has the highest percentage across all items in the questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire show several important conclusions: 1) The teacher feels that the whole series of training activities is helpful; 2) Writing scientific journal articles is essential; 3) Teachers think that the publication process through OJS is easy to understand. Overall, the training activities have improved teachers' abilities in compiling articles and accessing OJS, and the training activities received positive responses.

In this sense, this study aimed to find evidence that would allow identification and analysis of the evaluation period and publication of articles in scientific journals in the field of accounting. To achieve the proposed objectives, we performed a descriptive study using the research strategy document of eight articles in 660 journals linked to post-graduate studies in Accounting, from 2004 to 2009. The results demonstrated that the time for evaluation and publication of scientific work has increased over the period analyzed. It can be inferred that the classification of the periodic system Qualis / CAPES, the lifetime of the journal, the small number of assessors, the increase of scientific production in the area of accounting and the new evaluation policy of Qualis / CAPES as factors that affect time evaluation of the submitted articles in accounting journals.

Evaluation of the Status of Iran’s Scientific Production Concerning “Ramadan Fasting” in the Health Field Using PubMed and the Scopus Databases From Beginning to 2015: A Letter to the Editor
  • Aug 29, 2015
  • Jentashapir Journal of Health Research

Research and scholarly activities have always attracted the attention of both officials and scholars, as these activities have significant impact on the country’s scientific and economic growth. Experts consider research as the infrastructure of development and describe a successful and progressive society orbiting around scientific elite and competency. A society that its decisions are supported by academic institutions, aims towards development and promotion. Health scientific production is one of the means of improving health systems in each country. The number of articles published in the health field of each country is the index of its health system development and countries are classified according to their ability to produce knowledge. Furthermore, with increase in the number of scientific publications in the field of health, the challenges and solutions will be followed and discussed in this area too. Dissemination and application of knowledge in the field of health has a direct effect on improving researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers in the health sector. Fasting is one of the topics discussed in the medical field and one of the pillars of Islam worship. According to the commands of Islam, Muslims are required to fast during the holy month of Ramadan and do a series of tasks and rituals during this month. Some of these practices entail abstaining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. This hunger and thirst during the day, raises the question that what are the impacts of fasting on human health. One of the most common methods of evaluating scientific activities is scientometrics that was introduced in Russia and grew in eastern European countries, and then all around the world. Publication of articles in scientific journals that is the result of authors and peer review work (before publication) is one of the most important examples of scientific production. Scientometrics that describes research in various scientific communities could be a useful element for policy and research management and allocation of funds and resources in sciences. This research seeks to understand the fact that whether researchers have focused on the effects of fasting on health and how much is the medical scientific production on fasting. The findings could help the Iranian and foreign researchers to understand the shortages of research on fasting in the health field. To collect data, Medline and Scopus databases were used. Medline database is one of the areas of search and retrieval of medical science that is provided by national center for biotechnology information, (NCBI) at the US national library of medicine. For searching, keywords were fasting (Mesh) and Ramadan. Scopus database is one of medical science citation databases. In order to search in the Scopus database “fasting” and “Ramadan” keywords were used. A total of 476 papers were published in the PubMed database regarding these topics. Iran’s share of total production (476 Articles) was 40 articles (4.8%), which would locate Iran in the second place after Turkey with 48 articles. The other published articles belonged to Saudi Arabia (31 articles), Tunisia (30 articles), Morocco (25 articles), the United Kingdom (24 articles), Malaysia (15 articles), Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore (14 articles each), Qatar (13 articles), France (9 articles), Egypt (8 articles), and Algeria (6 articles). The Scopus database contained 540 articles in this area. Iran’s share of total production (540 article) was 57 articles (10.5%). Turkey was in the second place with

What Authors Need to Know to Navigate the Review Process Successfully: Understanding and Managing the Editor’s Dilemma
  • Jan 1, 2008
  • Dov Eden

After 30 years of experience publishing articles in scientific journals and service on editorial boards of leading journals, I accepted appointment to a three-year term as associate editor of Academy of Management Journal (AMI). Because of the trailing pipeline, the job actually extended beyond four years, during which I served as action-editor on over 300 submitted manuscripts, over 60 of which went through revision. As I became immersed in the role, I was surprised myself at some basic things I had not known about the refereeing process despite having published dozens of articles. This essay is intended to help young colleagues learn these things earlier than I did. I'm assuming the reader has read some of the basic books (e.g., Huff, 1999) and edited volumes (e.g., Cummings & Frost, 1995; Baruch, Sullivan, & Schepmyer, 2006) regarding the publication process, and especially specific chapters focused on the relationship between editor and author from both points of view (e.g., Daft, 1985; Zahra & Neubaum, 2006). Indeed, the availability of so much useful material gives me the feeling of, "Here we go again, one more time: How does one navigate the review process successfully?"
