Abstract

Details are given of a variable pressure gas Čerenkov detector which is being used to measure the energy of the electron beam from the U. C. L. 4.5 MeV microtron. Nitrogen which has a Čerenkov threshold at a pressure of about 18 atmospheres for 4.5 MeV electrons is used, but many other gases would also be suitable. The detector is capable of giving an absolute value of the electron energy to a accuracy of about ± 0.25%.
