Abstract

A miniature furnace suitable for the collection of single crystal x-ray diffraction data at temperatures between room temperature and about 200°C is described. The device was primarily designed for solid-state phase transformation investigations, but may be used for general diffraction studies. Commercially available goniometer heads require only minor modification to allow attachment of the furnace. The sample can be maintained for periods of up to several weeks with a temperature constancy to within ± 1°C. The integral arrangement of the goniometer head and furnace allows transferability of the unit, whilst maintaining the sample temperature. The region of reciprocal space normally accessible for data collection is not significantly reduced by use of the furnace.
