Abstract

Abstract This essay investigates the formative years of African-American poet, educator, and human rights activist Charlotte Forten [Grimké] in 1850s Salem, Massachusetts, to discuss her conflicted racial and gender identity. It also explores how various personal and professional challenges hindered young Forten's efforts to establish an independent, fulfilling life.
