Abstract

A FORTRAN IV computer program was constructed for Folk's (1974) sandstone classification. Petrographic point counting data are converted to whole rock percentages. These percentages are used to calculate the end members of Folk's classification system and to indicate the mineralogic clan of the rock. The program was designed with both ease of use and versatility as basic objectives, and is valuable, not only to the sedimentary petrographer, but also in classroom situations as an exercise in computer applications to geology.
