Abstract

Abstract 0. This paper summarizes research carried out a few years ago which aims at clarifying certain aspects of Glossematic theory. In this paper I shall redefine the five central Glossematic ‘functions’: 1 All technical terms enclosed in single quotation marks denote Glossematic concepts. ‘interdependence’, ‘determination’, ‘constellation’, ‘relation’, and ‘correlation’ in terms of expressions of predicate calculus. They can then be given a simple semantics in model theory. 2 For other treatments of Glossematics, see within traditional grammar Siertsema (1965); within transformational grammar Thümmel (1968) and Bierwisch (1971); within formal logic Wedberg (1953), who has attempted to clarify the commutation test, and Prebensen (1967), who rejects, no doubt correctly, the logical nature of Glossematic theory.
