Abstract

A linked-diagram expansion for the model-space effective Hamiltonian is derived. This expansion which contains the folded diagrams is independent of the energy eigenvalue. Our result is generally in agreement with the expansion obtained earlier by Brandow, Morita and Oberlechner et al., but our method of derivation is different from theirs and is probably simpler. The properties of the model-space wave functions and their connection with the true eigen-functions are investigated. In particular, a linked-diagram expansion is obtained for the evaluation of the expectation value of a general operator with respect to the true eigenfunction. This expansion also contains the folded diagrams and is independent of the energy eigenvalues.
