Abstract

Studying the series expansion of the thermodynamic potential forthe hard-core N3 lattice gas model, we provide evidencefor a first-order phase transition with a finite jump in densityand entropy, in agreement with numerical transfer matrixcalculations. The solid branch terminates at the criticalactivity zc, but the fluid branch continues beyond zc,describing a super-cooled fluid. It terminates withρ/ρcp ∼ 0.85 and finite entropy per lattice site. This termination density is close to the random-closest-packingdensity of the glassy state obtained for infinitely fast cooling.
