Abstract
We describe transformations which map the dimensions of planar 4-bar linkages onto finite regions of three-space, in order to provide parameters of value in selecting linkage dimensions to meet design requirements. Our chief objective is that the three-dimensional region employed should be well suited for the production of appropriate charts or for computer storage of parameters. Whilst we favour in our discussion the more utilitarian linkage type in which one link is capable of complete rotation relative to the other three, we also give extensive consideration to those chains which do not satisfy the Grashof criterion.
