Abstract
Synapsed chromosomes in Chlamydomonas reinhardi are shown to have atypical synaptonemal complexes. Lateral components are present but a central component is not observed. Electron microscopy revealed nodes similar to those observed in Neurospora crassa by Gillies [1] and in Ascobolus immersus, Ascobolus stercorarius, Ascobolus species, Ascophanus carneus, Podospora curvicola, Sordaria humana, Sordaria macrospora, and Sordaria fimicola by Zickler [2] in the central region, and electron-dense bodies similar to those described by Carpenter [3]. A pachytene karyotype using reconstructions from serial sections revealed 16 individual bivalents plus 4 bivalent arms attached to a common mass of condensed chromatin, yielding a haploid chromosome number of 18–20.
