Abstract
This study discusses the Jesuits' educational philosophy, in Brazilian cultural formation, using for that, as base, the letters written by José de Anchieta, called "Apostle of Brazil ". Father Anchieta was one of the first Jesuits who came to Brazil, at the beginning of the colonization, bringing, besides a great missionary fervor, the first systematized education to these lands. He dedicated 44 years to the work of Society of Jesus in Brazil. He acted mainly as an educator, having also participated of the school of Vila de Piratininga (Piratininga Village) foundation, where later it would be born the city of São Paulo. The letters of Anchieta, that we used as source for our research, besides being precious documents that tell us a lot about Brazilian society of the 16th century, are also the first expression of Brazilian literature

A Companhia de Jesus exerceu uma evidente influência na formação do pensamento moderno, principalmente por meio de seu trabalho missionário e educacional. Nos primeiros anos de sua existência - no período que mais nos interessa, por ser o período de vida do Pe. José de Anchieta -, os jesuítas se espalharam pelo mundo, levando o ideal de seu pai e fundador para todas as partes.
